From sports to sewing, there are camps for everyone in Ashcroft this summer

The Kids’ Arts Camp is back, and anyone who wants to give dancing a try can try a variety of styles.

School has only been out for a week; but some parents (and children) are probably already looking for activities to keep the kids busy during the summer.

There are several summer camps running at the Ashcroft HUB in July and August, with something to suit almost every taste (and some that adults can take part in!).

TRYathlon training camp

On July 6, 11, and 13 the Kids’ TRYatlon training camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for children aged six to 12. Participants will learn about taking part in a triathlon, bike safety, and increase their skills in swimming, biking, and running.

The camp is run by the Desert Hills Tri Club, and the cost is $30 per day or $80 for all the sessions, with a second sibling paying half-rate. Each participant gets a commemorative T-shirt.

Sewing camp

A sewing camp for those aged 12 and older runs weekdays from July 10 to 21 from 1 to 3 p.m. daily. Participants will work on a variety of projects as suits their interests, and also receive sewing tips from volunteers.

The sewing camp is being sponsored by the HUB, and the cost is $30 for one week or $50 for both (all supplies are included).

Sports camp

The Sage Hills Evangelical Free Church is holding a sports camp from 6 to 8:30 p.m., July 24 to 27. The camp is for those aged six to 12, and the cost is $20, with discounts for additional siblings. Participants receive a T-shirt.

Among the sports on offer at the camp are soccer, pickleball, and basketball.

Dance workshops

Krush Dance is holding dance workshops from 9 a.m. to noon, August 9 to 11. The workshops are for children, teens, and adults, with participants rotating through a variety of dance styles, including tap combo, hip hop combo, and musical theatre.

It’s a great introduction to Krush and to the world of dancing. If you’ve been afraid to try, this is an ideal opportunity to see if dance is for you. The cost is $75 for one person or $100 per family.

Fine and Dramatic Arts camp

The Winding Rivers Arts & Performance Society is back with its annual Fine and Dramatic Arts camp from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., August 14 to 18. Designed for those aged four to 19, the camp offers a variety of activities, including painting with Jo Petty, music with Dave Dumont, singing with Theresa Tackacs, and acting with Mavourneen Varcoe-Ryan. Teenage students can rotate through all these activities, or can take a week-long moviemaking course run by Gareth Smart, with participants writing, directing, filming, and starring in their own movie.

There will be a finale performance showcasing all the participants’ skills and accomplishments after lunch on Friday, August 18, with everyone welcome to attend. Snacks are provided, but participants should bring their own lunches. The cost is $75 for the first child, with each additional sibling charged $50.

Space at all these camps is limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. For more information, or to register, drop in at the HUB or call 250-453-9177 during office hours (9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Thursday; 9 a.m. to noon on Fridays), or email ashcrofthub@gmail.com.
