What happened to fall? We went straight into winter!

It was 2 C and snowing on Oct. 2, wow!

How about some hot soup to warm you? Soup days are continuing every Tuesday at noon at Clemes Hall.

The New Horizon’s Senior’s grant program (NHSP) is funding this program, and the objectives include encouraging volunteerism and promoting community unity. We are looking for folks to step up and volunteer to make the soup – the grant will pay for the ingredients – and we’d really like you all to attend!

It’s a nice way to spend your lunch time visiting with friends and neighbours over a bowl of soup. Please watch for posters, or follow us on Facebook to keep up with what the various activities will be.

The NHSP also had us host a fall equinox dinner. Although it was a very small turnout, those who came were treated to a feast! Celebrating the local bounty, we had three types of squash, baked salmon, peach cobbler, and so much more. Thanks to Cheryl Klein for all the hard work and fantastic food.

As the equinox marks the time of year when the daylight equals night – nature’s balance – we had Dwayne Rourke explain and lead us though a traditional equinox ritual of balancing an egg. Most of us gave it a shot, and most of us had success! Thanks Dwayne for sharing your passion with us!

The next celebration will be on Dec 21 when we mark the shortest day of the year on the winter solstice.

AGM

The SBCC held its annual general meeting on Sept. 19. I’m pleased to say that there were enough of us for a new executive to be elected.

All by acclamation, the following make up the 2018/19 executive: president, Mavourneen Varcoe-Ryan; vice-president, Oliva Watson; and secretary/treasurer, Jim Ryan.

The four directors are Terri Simpson, Dorothy Borangno, Cheryl Klein, and Annette Albert.

The T.V. Society chair is Alex Kinasewich; Jim Ryan is the vice-chair; and the secretary/treasurer is Carolynne Terry.

Thank-you so much everyone for putting your name out there to volunteer to support our wonderful little community. It isn’t always easy stepping up – often one is met with criticism, negativity and abuse, but the success makes it all worthwhile, and your efforts are appreciated.

Thanks too to out-going directors Lori Minnabarriet and Carolynne Terry.

Community club

Everyone is welcome to join the Spences Bridge Community Club (SBCC) and get involved in planning and hosting events and activities. We meet the second Tuesday of month at 7 p.m. at Clemes Hall.

Yearly memberships are due and are valid until next September. Memberships are $5.

Move made

The farmer’s/flea market has moved back to the hall. Just in time for the snow to fly!

Every Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. there are vendors selling their produce, crafts, coffee, second-hand treasures, baking and more.

If you would like to book a table, please call Terri at 250-458-2513. The market is hosting an appreciation lunch on the final market of the year. There will be a turkey lunch with all the fixins served on Oct. 28, by donation.

Bingo back

Bingo is back from the summer break and continues the first and third Monday of the month.

Doors open at 5:30 p.m., games start at 6:30 – always some great food at the concession, and the toonie pot is growing. This is a great way to support the SBCC, have fun, and maybe win some money all at once.

Application approved

I’m super excited to announce the final step in the funding application was approved for the renovations of Clemes Hall! Thanks to the TNRD and NDIT for the funding.

We’re ready to start the work, so please excuse the mess in the hall at bingos, markets and so on. It will be so amazing that it will be worth it!

The boarded up-river side windows will be opened up, new insulation and coverings for the walls and ceiling, insulation and redesign of the back storage, a gazebo and picnic tables outside… and more.

Halloween party

Halloween is just around the corner and the SBCC is again hosting a party complete with games, prizes, wiener roast, and fireworks.

All the ghoulish fun will start at 4 p.m. at the old school. The kids can go trick or treating at 6 p.m., but come back for the fireworks at 7. You don’t have to have kids to join us for a hotdog and a cup of hot chocolate and watch the fireworks.

Calendar

• Christmas Bazaar on Dec.1

• Ham & Turkey bingo on Dec.7

• Winter Solstice Celebration on Dec. 21
