The Wellness and Health Action Coalition (WHAC), in conjunction with the Doctors of B.C., sponsored the second annual Walk With Your Doc in Ashcroft over the lunch hour on Tuesday, May 8. More than 50 adults and students took part in the walk.

Special thanks to Dr. Adetola, Dr. Gwilliam, and staff from the Ashcroft Family Medical Practice, as well as staff from Ashcroft IDA and Mayor Jack Jeyes for supporting the walk.

Thanks to IDA for supplying water, Safety Mart for providing apples and oranges, and the Western Interior Chapter of the Rural and Remote Division of Family Practice and Chellie Dickinson, Chapter Coordinator, for providing baked goods following the walk.

Also thanks to Desert Sands Community School for allowing two teachers and the Grade 8 students to attend the walk. During the Ashcroft walk we enjoyed the many mosaics around town, got better acquainted with our doctors, and discussed the concept of “What Matters to You?” It is a simple question aimed at improving communication, fostering shared decisions, and ensuring that care is aligned with what matters to patients and their families. Check it out at whatmatterstoyoubc.ca.

Between 50 and 60 adults, as well as students and teachers from David Stoddard School, made the Clinton Walk With Your Doc a successful event. Community nurse Sonya Sullivan, Mayor Jim Rivett, and councillor and community paramedic Diana Guerin took part.

Many thanks to the Clinton Outdoor Sports Association for serving hot dogs, the Legion Auxiliary for the fresh fruit trays, the Clinton Health Care Auxiliary for providing water, and to Fran White and Emily Harvey for the cookies.

The walkers at both events were pleased with the gifts of pedometers they received from the Doctors of B.C. to keep track of their steps for the day and for future walks.

Finally: are you a member of WHAC? If not, please join. Membership applications and fees (a whole $5 per year) can be dropped at the Ashcroft IDA Drugstore. The more members we can report, the more influence we have with the decision- and policymakers at every level. Check out the WHAC website at www.whac-chb.ca for more information.

Thank you all for your ongoing support!
