The April 23, Ashcroft Village Council meeting was preceded by the Committee of the Whole session which featured several presentations, including Let’s Paint the Town Promotion, the annual Volunteer Fire Department operations update, and the off-leash dog park.

Following the regular meeting agenda, council went over Ashcroft’s 4-H Club’s request for sponsorship, which council offered to provide up to $500 as a Grant-in-Aid for a specific ask. The 4-H Club will send the council more information when they have a specific project in mind.

Council moved to declare May 5 to 11 as Hospice Palliative Care week.

They also moved to receive and file the information regarding the Ashcroft Art Club’s invitation to the 52nd annual Fine Art Show and Sale from April 26 to 29.

Council discussed Waldemar Paolnau and Dorothy Smith’s application for the development of a new garage on their lot. When put to a vote, council voted unanimously to allow the rezoning for the new structure.

The Kids TRYathlon for their need for donations of the pool and lifeguards was discussed and council moved to donate use of the pool and lifeguards on the day of the TRYathlon.

There was a brief discussion around the Village of Kaslo’s “Escape the City Contest.”

The contest is an innovative social media campaign to discover if Millennials are interested in moving out of the big cities to rural BC towns. Mayor Barbara Roden said, “I think this would be a great community engagement project.”

Council was also invited to attend the unveiling of the Japanese Internment Mosaic on Oct. 5, 2019. Mayor Roden commented on the fact that the creation of the mosaic moved very quickly, adding, “This is all very exciting!” Ashcroft’s Japanese sister town, Bifuka, is planning a trip in October, but that is still a plan in the making.

Concluding new business, council discussed the Clinton Para-Transit system’s application to purchase a transit shelter through BC transit, an item they believe would be beneficial for the transport users.

Minutes of council meetings and all of the documents referenced in the minutes are always available for perusal at the Village office and on the Village of Ashcroft website, as are agendas for upcoming Council meetings, minutes of past Council meetings, and current and past Village Newsletters.
