Ashcroft RCMP responded to 129 calls for service in Ashcroft, Cache Creek, and the surrounding area during the period May 5 to 28, 2018. The detachment is getting into the busy summer season, when calls for service increase to approximately 50 a week.

Squirrels being shot

There have been reports of squirrels being shot by a person or persons with BB guns in the area of Cumming Boulevard in Cache Creek. The public is reminded that harming animals in this way, and in an urban area, may be deemed unsafe, and could result in charges of Mischief or Cruelty to Animals.

Stolen cars being dumped

Police are actively investigating a series of recovered stolen automobiles out of the Lower Mainland area, which are being deposited in this area and neighbouring jurisdictions. These vehicles are believed to be related to recent business break-and-enters. Anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the police or Crimestoppers.

Watch for cows on road

Police are getting lots of calls about animals (cows) on the roadways: 12 in the past three weeks. One cow was hit by a vehicle and killed on Highway 1 near the Basque Ranch. Police will call local ranchers in the area when we get these calls, so that they can return the animals to the paddock/grazing areas.

If a rancher is not available, police will try to get the cow contained if it is found in a high traffic area.

Many roles and responsibilities

Police were called to eight calls for service to assist in the area of Mental Health-related calls. Police will liaise with local Interior Health mental health professionals when necessary, and will take those in need to the hospital for care under the Mental Health Act.

Police continue to have many roles and responsibilities in the “social service” side of their duties.

Summer season driving

As always with the summer season, traffic flow has increased through our area as people travel around our fine province and the Gold Country region.

Please remember this as you make your own travel plans so you can account for delays or slower traffic, allowing you to arrive at your destination on time and safely.

We continue to receive many traffic complaints regarding driving behaviour, and see an increase in collisions, at this time of year, so let’s try to keep our roads safe.

If you have information about any crimes in the area, please contact the Ashcroft RCMP at (250) 453-2216, or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
