A new mural in the Youth Centre room at the Ashcroft HUB is the brainchild of the HUB’s youth programs coordinator, River Winwood, and Hannah Franes.

Winwood applied for funding for the project through the United Way Thompson Nicola Cariboo after hearing about the grant from HUB executive director Vicky Trill. The grant was for a continuing space or program that would benefit youth in the long term, and had to be applied for by someone aged 15 to 25 years old.

Winwood was successful in her grant application, and turned to her friend Hannah Franes for assistance. “I had ideas, and Hannah designed the mural,” says Winwood. Franes is also using the project in her application to the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver.

The mural depicts youth in a variety of activities: sports, music, reading, dancing, and just hanging out with friends. The designs were projected against the north wall of the room and blown up, then traced onto the wall. A willing group of assistants then stepped in to paint the mural. “Lots of people helped out,” says Winwood.

The mural is almost complete apart from a few finishing touches. It will provide colour in the Youth Centre, which is home to a Teen Night every Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Winwood oversees the Teen Night, which features a variety of activities, including indoor and outdoor sports, cooking, games, challenges, and more. The event is open to all area teens.
