Despite several weather challenges, the Ashcroft Slo-Pitch Showdown Volume 2, hosted by the Ashcroft Volunteer Fire Department (AVFD), took place over the weekend of April 28.

Twelve teams from the coast, Lillooet, Merritt, Kamloops, and the local area took part in the fun-filled event that raised approximately $3,500 for training and equipment for the AVFD.

Defending champions 9 Jerks and a Squirt from Kamloops were once again the tournament champions, with local team the Green Jays taking second spot. The Mounties, made up of members from the Ashcroft RCMP detachment (with a little help from some friends, including a couple of members from Merritt Fire Rescue), lost all their games, but tournament co-organizer Capt. Jonah Anstett of the AVFD said that “They had a blast. For a team that wasn’t a [regular] ball team, they had a lot of fun.

“And all the other teams loved playing them, and said how great they were.” The Mounties were named the Most Sportsmanlike team, and the tournament MVPs were Bryann Smith (female) and Jonathan Hall (male).

Anstett adds that the final game, between 9 Jerks and the Green Jays, was a hard-fought affair right to the end. “It was a real barn-burner. Everyone had a blast. People are already looking forward to next year, and teams have said they’ll be back.”
