Charlotte Diamond tickets still available

Juno Award-winning singer-songwriter Charlotte Diamond, accompanied by her son Matt, will be performing at the Ashcroft HUB on Saturday, June 24 as a fundraiser for the HUB, and tickets are still available

The concert starts at 2 p.m., with a CD and merchandise table available starting at 1:15; seating begins at 1:45. After the show, Charlotte and Matt will be available for autographs and photos. Advance tickets (available at the HUB during office hours) are $8 for those aged two to 12, and $10 for those 13 and older; tickets at the door are $13/$15. Cash purchase only.

Village of Ashcroft barbecue

To celebrate its 65th anniversary of incorporation, the Village of Ashcroft is hosting a free barbecue on Saturday, June 24 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the gazebo in the Heritage Park on Railway. Mayor Jack Jeyes and council invite you to come on down for hamburgers, drinks, and cake; meet with friends and neighbours; and perhaps share some stories about your experience of living in Ashcroft and the history of the village.

There will be free swimming at the Ashcroft pool on June 24 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Canada Day at the Legion

Royal Canadian Legion Branch #113 in Ashcroft will once again be holding a Canada Day celebration on July 1, following the annual event put on by the Winding Rivers Arts & Performance Society (the WRAPS event runs from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Heritage Park; see page 8 for more information). There will be food and refreshments at this all-ages event, and participants are reminded to BYOB—bring your own banana—to create a delicious banana split.

Disposing of unwanted furniture and electronics

At least one thrift store in Ashcroft has noticed an increase in the number of unwanted items of furniture and electronics being left outside the store now that tipping fees have been put in place at the Cache Creek transfer station. Many of these items cannot be sold by the store, which has limited storage space, and the volunteers who work there must then dispose of them.

Anyone with unwanted electronic equipment can dispose of it, free of charge, at the Bottle Depot on Railway Avenue in Ashcroft, while anyone with unwanted furniture that is in good condition can contact The Equality Project in Cache Creek, which is always looking for items of furniture its clients can make use of. You can contact The Equality Project at (250) 457-6485.

Kids’ TRYathlon and training camp

The annual Kids’ TRYathlon, put on by the Desert Hills Tri Club, will be taking place in Ashcroft on Saturday, July 15. The event is open to all children and youth who are 19 or younger, with the length of each portion of the race—swimming, biking, and running—tailored to different age groups. The event is limited to the first 80 participants, and while there is no charge to take part, each participant is asked to provide an adult to volunteer at the event.

An orientation session and bike check for all participants will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 14 at the Ashcroft HUB. On Saturday, all bikes must be in the transition area and racers ready to go by 8:45 a.m. The race starts at 9 a.m. at the HUB, and residents are encouraged to come out and cheer on the participants.

There will also be four days of training for participants, on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning on July 4. Each session runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and participants can register for as many or as few days as they want. Those attending will learn about triathlons, bike safety, and improving their skills for the event.

For more information about the TRYathlon and the training camp, or to register, email ashcrofthub@gmail.com or call (250) 453-9177.

Open market at the HUB

The Ashcroft HUB is looking for vendors and food concessions to be at the HUB on Saturday, July 15 for an open market to run in conjunction with the Kids’ TRYathlon. The market is planned as on outdoor event, but if the weather does not cooperate it will be run in the gymnasium.

There is no charge for vendors, but anyone who finds the event worthwhile is invited to make a donation to the HUB. Vendors must set up by 10:15 a.m. and stay until 1:30 p.m. For more information, or to register as a vendor, email ashcrofthub@gmail.com or call (250) 453-9177. You can also visit the HUB’s Facebook page (The Ashcroft HUB Society).

TRU courses available

Thompson Rivers University will be holding a Foodsafe Level 1 course at the Ashcroft HUB on Saturday, June 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This program is appropriate for food handlers, kitchen staff, and dining room attendants. Course content includes the purchase and storage of potentially hazardous foods; personal hygiene; the causes of food-borne diseases; and maintaining a sanitary food service operation. The fee for the course is $115.

There will also be a Fall Protection/Fall Restraint course on Friday, June 30 at the HUB from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The essential elements of this industrial safety program include identifying a location’s fall hazards posed by falling objects; establishing the methods through which the hazards will be controlled; developing a rescue procedure; training participants to use the fall protection equipment and comply with the location’s work policies and rescue procedures; and equipment maintenance. The fee for the course is $300.
