Slow down and move over
Throughout February, the BC Highway Patrol is asking drivers to use the “70/40” rule to help them slow down and move over when there are flashing lights on the road. All drivers are required to reduce their speed and (if possible) move into the furthest lane of traffic away from any stopped vehicles with flashing red, blue, or yellow lights. These include police, fire, and ambulance vehicles; construction vehicles; tow trucks; and utility and maintenance vehicles.
When the normal speed limit is 80 km/hr or higher, drivers must slow down to 70 km/hr or less. When the normal speed limit is below 80 km/hr, drivers must slow down to 40 km/hr or less. Drivers who disobey this rule could face a $173 fine and three penalty points.
