Free workshops will address communications, stress, and much more

The workshops are part of the effort to help local businesses after last year’s fires.

Dealing with stress will be one topic covered at free workshops sponsored by Community Futures Sun Country.

Community Futures Sun Country (CFSC) is sponsoring two free workshops open to anyone: one focusing on “Stress and Time Management”, the other on “Communicating as a Leader and Conflict Management”. Both workshops are being co-sponsored by the Western Economic Diversification BC Wildfire Business Transitions project.

“One thing that we identified through our surveys was that stress was an issue,” says CFSC manager Deb Arnott. “Communication was also an issue, as was conflict management. And the workshops will help small business owners work with their peers and staff, and how to respond and make things easier in the work environment.

“A lot of people start a business but have no training in these areas: stress, trauma, listening to learn.”

Both workshops will be led by John Singleton, an expert in personal development, leadership, and training whose focus and experience has been as a strategic planning facilitator, business trainer, and executive coach. He uses his talents and experiences to encourage and assist people to find their best from within for both business and personal excellence.

The “Stress and Time Management” workshop takes places from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Cache Creek Community Hall on Friday, April 27. Areas covered will include the causes, impacts, reactions, and results to and of stress; methods to control your reaction; simple shifts and adjustments to manage your time; and the importance of refocusing, with Arnott saying that the workshop would be of benefit to anyone.

“Communicating as a Leader and Conflict Management” will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, also at the Cache Creek Community Hall, and would be of special interest to business owners, says Arnott. The Communications portion will cover what challenges you face; a methodology to plan for changes; communications styles; and listening to learn, while “Conflict Management” looks at causes and reactions; response methods; and what you can do to change.

Arnott says that the Community Futures business ambassadors have been hearing from businesses about what gaps they see when it comes to support, and they are trying to fill those gaps.

“It’s all about business. We’re working with different organizations to provide support, and there will be more workshops.

“We want to hear from businesses: there might be something out there that we haven’t thought of, and we’re open to suggestions.”

Refreshments will be provided at both sessions, with lunch provided on April 28. Anyone interested in registering for one or both of the workshops can call (250) 453-9165 (toll-free 1-800-567-9911).
