Hazardous and e-waste collection here in May

May 7 in Cache Creek and Clinton, May 8 in Ashcroft.

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District is launching a campaign to receive hazardous waste in the region, hoping to make the new initiative a yearly event.

Eight separate Free Household Hazardous Waste & Recycling Round-Up events will take place in the TNRD in May and June. Clinton and Cache Creek will host theirs on May 7; AshcroftÕs will take place on May 8.

"Now is the time to check under your sink, in your basement or closet, or shed, and round up all the household hazardous materials you're no longer using," said Jaime Vieira, TNRD Environmental Services technologist. "These are items that are toxic, corrosive, reactive or ignitable."

Examples of hazardous materials includes: adhesives, antifreeze, batteries, gasoline, kerosene, mercury, paint, pesticides, propane tanks, oil, fertilizer and grease. Electronic waste which includes computers, monitors, TVs, VCR/DVD players, stereo equipment, cameras and cell phones, will also be accepted at these events.

"This type of waste should not be disposed of with your regular garbage because it is dangerous and harmful to the environment when buried in a landfill," added Vieira. "This is why we're offering the free service, allowing residents to get rid of these difficult to dispose of hazardous materials."

Cache Creek's takes place on May 7 from 9 am to 3 pm at the InfoCentre at the corner of Hwy 97 and Stage Rd. and they will be accepting tires;

Clinton's takes place on May 7 from 9 am to 3 pm at the Village Public Works Yard (1426 Government St.); and

Ashcroft's event takes place on May 8 from 9 am to 3 pm at the Recycling Depot on Railway Ave.
