Menorah lighting marks Chanukah on Dec. 20

Two public events planned for Greater Victoria next week

Those of the Jewish faith, and others wishing to take part in the first night of Chanukah, have the opportunity to join in two public ceremonies in Victoria next week.

On Tuesday (Dec. 20), Victoria Mayor Dean Fortin lights the menorah and eats Isreali jelly donuts called Sufganiyot. The event at City Hall takes place at 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome.

Later that same day, Oak Bay-Gordon head MLA Ida Chong conducts a similar ceremony on the front steps of the B.C. Legislature.

The 2.5-metre menorah will be lit in a ceremony at 5:30 p.m. involving Sufganivot, dreidels, chocolate gelt and music by the 5th (B.C.) Field Regiment Canadian Military Brass band.

Participants at the event will receive a dreidel glasses while quantities last.

Chanukah is a Jewish holiday known as the festival of lights.
