Seniors' Symposium planned for fall

The Better At Home-sponsored event will bring together seniors, their families, and those providing services to seniors in the local area.

A Seniors’ Symposium is being planned in Ashcroft on October 1, with the intention of bringing together local seniors and their families, as well as people, organizations, and groups that offer services for seniors. The event is being sponsored by the Ashcroft/Cache Creek Better At Home (BAH) program, and Program Coordinator Nancy Kendall says there’s a need for such an event in the community.

“People have questions, and this is the best way to get the information out there all at once. I can’t answer all the questions, as I don’t know the answers.”

A small group of organizers met recently to begin planning the event. It’s hoped to have representatives from a wide assortment of local groups, to talk about items such as transit, computer fraud, healthcare, exercise and fitness, financial planning and services, nutrition, home support, senior abuse, and much more.

Housing options is an area that Kendall hopes to have represented. “Housing is a huge issue in the area. People have to look five years down the road.”

There would not be set times for presentations. Instead, attendees will be able to drop in at their leisure and find out about services that are most relevant to them. Kendall says that anyone interested in seeing a particular topic addressed should contact her at (250) 453-9911 and leave a message.

“We’re hoping that seniors,  their families, and their friends, will come to find and get information they’re looking for, to ensure that seniors in our communities are taken care of. It’s a non-structured format that we hope people will find enjoyable and relaxing, with a bit of a social connection.”

She notes that some people have transit issues, and that’s something the organizers are working on for the event.
