The Bridging to Literacy Group will be marking Volunteer Week (April 10–16) with an event that will provide local non-profit groups and potential volunteers with an opportunity to connect.
No date has been set for the event, but Literacy Outreach Coordinator Jessica Clement says that the event will be “like a craft fair, except with volunteer opportunities instead of baked goods.” An invitation will be sent out to area non-profit groups, inviting them to the event. Clement says that it will provide them with an opportunity to network and start or build partnerships with other organizations. “One group may want to do something, but they’re missing one piece of the puzzle. By networking they can find out where to find it.”
It will also allow community members to come and see what groups are out there and what they do, and possibly sign on as volunteers. “People can see all the groups that do things, and what they offer,” says Clement. “It’s a low-stress way to step into the volunteer world for people who are considering it. There’s no pressure; it’s a very low-key, nice way to find the right fit for anyone looking to volunteer.”
As far as Clement knows, it’s the first time such an event has been offered in the area. Anyone in the Ashcroft, Cache Creek, and Spences Bridge area is welcome to attend, as an organization or as a potential volunteer.
