Villages help team go to the provincials

Councils debate donating money to schools

Villages help team go to the provincials

The Ashcroft high school girls’ basketball team will be competing with the best teams from around the province at the 2011 BC Senior Girls A Basketball Championship Tournament, March 9-12 in Sparwood. However, finding the money to attende games or host them isn’t easy.Councils in Cache Creek and Ashcroft found themselves uncomfortably debating a funding request from the team’s coach for the finals’ tournament they hosted in February.Cache Creek Coun. Ida Makaro felt that funding school sports should be the responsibility of the school board, not the municipality. She thought the team could have done more to raise money in the community. In Ashcroft, Mayor Andy Anderson pointed out that citizens have the choice of donating to these teams, but they have to donate again through their taxes if the village decides to make a donation.Ashcroft, however, has a policy to donate to teams attending provincials, and voted to give them $500 for that trip.Cache Creek voted to give them $100, also for the trip to the provincials.
