As 2018 draws to a close, I would like to reflect on the events of the past year both from a provincial and a local perspective.
Sadly, the NDP government has imposed 19 new or increased taxes since 2017.
I am concerned about the potential impact on our rural communities, especially those still rebuilding from wildfires, floods, and landslides.
These events over the past two years have been emotionally and financially draining. We tragically saw the loss of two lives, which devastated the community, and people’s livelihoods were destroyed by the damage they suffered.
I’ve been working to help individuals, businesses, First Nations, and farmers get recovery support. That includes pressing the government to make area landslides eligible for Disaster Financial Assistance, and reimburse the Bonaparte Indian Band and various volunteer fire departments for costs incurred.
It has been a tough road, but I’m proud of the way our community has travelled it together.
On a brighter note, I was thrilled by the federal announcement of $9.2 million to support the Ashcroft Terminal. The terminal’s planned improvements to facilitate growth will be a game-changer for our region.
I was also honoured to take part in a gathering to discuss a renewed partnership between Historic Hat Creek and the Bonaparte Band, along with other stakeholders. I’m excited for the future of this tourism spot, and look forward to seeing how this partnership enhances its offerings.
Another site with great tourism potential is the McAbee Fossil Bed site east of Cache Creek. We also saw the unveiling of the Harmony Bell in Ashcroft, which will be a place of community gathering and celebration.
There is much work ahead in 2019. As your MLA, I will continue working to secure a bright future for all residents of Ashcroft, Cache Creek, and area.
