Literacy is something all members of the family can share; and during Family Literacy Week there are a number of activities going on in the region to promote the love of reading.

The province has declared that January 22 to 29 is “BC Family Literacy Week”, and Bridging to Literacy has plenty of fun events lined up in Ashcroft, Cache Creek, and Spences Bridge to mark the occasion.

The province-wide campaign will see activities in more than 400 communities, with this year’s theme being “Tuning Into Music: Listen! Make! Move!” The events are designed to stress the vital role of play in children’s lives, and the importance of families engaging in play-based activities together.

“All of the events are free,” says literacy outreach coordinator Jessica Clement. “And most of the events will be for all ages. There will be crafts and colouring, so even young children will get something out of it.”

The week of events kicks off on Monday, January 23 with a “Literacy Survivor” challenge at the Ashcroft HUB from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Come and see if you have what it takes to win!

On Tuesday, January 24 there will be a session at the Cache Creek Community Hall from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., where participants can make their own musical instruments and play a variety of games. This session will also be held at the Cook’s Ferry Indian Band Office in Spences Bridge on Wednesday, January 25 from 4 to 6 p.m., with the addition of a chance to play badminton as well.

On Thursday, January 26 the Cache Creek library plays host to a session of musical games, activities, and crafts from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. And don’t miss a chance to join Drummer Dave from Kamloops for some musical fun at the Ashcroft library from 4 to 5 p.m. on Friday, January 27. Drummer Dave brings his own percussion instruments for demonstrations, and a chance for kids to take part in their own percussion session.

The week winds up with a free skate at the Drylands Arena in Ashcroft from 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. on Saturday, January 28. Bridging to Literacy thanks the Village of Cache Creek for the donation of the use of the Community Hall, and the Village of Ashcroft for sponsoring the free skate.

Snacks and prizes will be available at all the events, and a draw for a grand prize will take place on January 28. For more information, go to facebook.com/bridgingtoliteracy, or call Jessica at (250) 457-7128.
