Last week, thousands of people around the globe took part in the Lions World Wide Week of Service to Fight Hunger, and members of the Ashcroft and District Lions Club were no exception.

It is estimated that nearly 800 million people go to bed hungry every night, and Lions clubs were encouraged to find ways of fighting hunger in their own communities. The Ashcroft club, which took part in the initiative for the first time this year, chose three ways to help. They began on January 10, when five members helped prepare and serve food for clients of The Equality Project in Cache Creek. They also presented the Project with a cheque for $100 to assist them in their work.

On Friday, January 13 five Lions provided the food, served lunch, and then cleaned up at Soup’s On in Ashcroft. And on Wednesday, January 18, several members of the club put on a free barbecue and served hamburgers to everyone who came to the food bank at the Elizabeth Fry Society office in Ashcroft.

“These three projects were chosen because they all support people in need,” says Lions club secretary-treasurer Vivian Edwards. “It is wonderful what these three organizations do to help people in our communities. The lions were proud to be able to help.”

Edwards adds that Sue Peters at the Husky station in Cache Creek donated all the soup, and Darlene Daily donated desserts, while Edwards supplied fruit and vegetables.

The Lions are now working on plans for the Mother’s Day Fly-in breakfast at the air strip outside Cache Creek on May 14, and for the annual Skip’s Run in Ashcroft on June 4. The club is also pleased to be inducting 10 new members this week.
