Larry Foss goes back a long way in this region: he worked at Historic Hat Creek as a teamster and storyteller from 1994 to 2011, did 480 live performances of the Bill Miner Wild West Show featuring the “Spirit of Kamloops” heritage train, has worked on dozens of film and TV productions in a variety of roles (including being Robert Redford’s photo double for An Unfinished Life in 2003), established the BX Stagecoach Company Ltd. tourism entertainment business in 2003, and much more. In 1995, when The Journal celebrated its 100th anniversary, Larry was on hand to drive people around downtown in a haywagon.

He has recently moved back to Ashcroft, and wanted to share his poem ‘”The Gal Who Invented Kissin’” with Journal readers. It will be included in a volume of Larry’s poems and writing that will be published in spring 2019, and is appearing in print here for the first time.

I love the Gal who invented kissin’;

I don’t recall her name.

But I do believe that Gal

Should sit high in the hall of fame.

Until she came along

Just think what we were missin’.

That’s why today I shout hooray

For the Gal who invented kissin’.

She taught fellows to smooch,

And holdin’ hands.

She taught us how to steal a kiss,

Like in foreign lands.

Until she came along

Just think what we were missin’.

Love was very nice, but cold as ice

’Til that Gal invented kissin’.

We thought they only cook,

Or read a book.

Vikings sailed to Newfoundland.

Then Columbus found America.

Mr. Edison invented the light bulb,

Mr. Bell the telephone.

Mr. Ford the automobile,

Wright Brothers the flying machine.

Mexico invented Rodeo.

She patented Kiss of Fire,

How to kiss goodnight.

Every kind of kiss and hug,

She holds copyright.

If I had my wish

I’d make a date,

Stay out late,

With the Gal who invented kissin’.
