Get ready for the Ashcroft-Cache Creek Seniors’ Strawberry Tea on April 28.

The most recent potluck lunch of the Ashcroft-Cache Creek Seniors was held on April 18, and we were very happy to have a good turnout of members with a selection of delicacies for us to enjoy.

After the potluck lunch we had a presentation from Vivian Edwards and Kitty Murray regarding the need for an off-leash dog park. Various proposals have been made, and the ladies reminded us of a meeting about the dog park in the Ashcroft Community Hall on May 3 to explore this topic. They asked us for our ideas or proposals to consider, both before and at the meeting, and left us with several pertinent suggestions and relevant brochures.

The AGM started at 1 p.m., and it was a pleasure to see so many attending and sharing opinions. The first item on the agenda was the reading of last month’s minutes. This was accepted as read by the members, and we moved on to discuss the business arising since the last meeting.

Our finances are in a reasonable state, and some queries from the members arose and were answered. The kitchen has been running smoothly and economically, thanks to Kevin and his helpers.

We had a table at the Community Connect Expo on April 14 for the purpose of making our group better known in the area. Unfortunately, it was disappointing, in that few people stopped to see what we have to offer while on their way from the talks to the food booths before attending the next talk!

Kevin reported an enjoyable day at the Carpet Bowling tournament on April 11, and told us that one of our teams did very well while the other one … did not! Kathy gave us a report on the Crafts, and let us know that in spite of our vigilance, some more things had disappeared from the craft room without payment. Everything in that room costs money, time, and effort, and it is a shame that someone does not recognize that.

Regarding the 55+ Games, we heard that some contestants are finding that travel and lodging while at the games entails too much expense. It was suggested that perhaps they could include the games as part of a vacation stay in the area.

The question arose about changing the number of business meetings to become eligible for holding office from five to two. This will be voted on at the meeting in May.

Members were asked for donations of unused or unworn goods for the various draws at the Strawberry Tea, which will be held on Saturday, April 28. The outer door will be open at about noon to allow inspection of the crafts room and the purchase of items there before having tea.

The Strawberry Tea will cost $5 per person and will be served at 1 p.m. (and not before, although the hall will be available for sitting and chatting somewhat earlier than that) and will go on until 3 p.m., when the various draws will be made.

A letter was read from Donna Tetrault, our secretary, giving notice of her resignation, and was accepted regretfully. She has done a terrific job for us and we thank her for all her efforts on our behalf. She was presented with a well-earned parting gift by Muriel Scallon, with good wishes and thanks for all her hard work.

A surprise celebration was held for Rod Craggs’s 90th birthday, complete with birthday cake, and we all sang “Happy Birthday” to him, with wishes for an even longer life!

The report from the Sunshine committee included the sending of get well cards to some of our members who have recently been suffering from chest colds following the smoky spells we have had since last year’s fires. Many people in the Village know what these coughs have been like and how they linger on! We also heard reports about some of our members who have moved away from Ashcroft for various reasons, but have kept in touch.

At our meeting in May we will have several things to consider, such as the change to the Bylaws and the elections of president, first vice president, secretary, and kitchen convenor, and we hope we have a good turnout of members to make their wishes known.

Thank you once more to all our volunteers and active members for your help and support. Without your work behind the scenes we would be quite unhappy campers!
