The new sound dampening material for the gym at the Ashcroft HUB was officially unveiled on April 21, after being used for the first time during the Lisa Brokop concert the night before. The material, hung in panels along three of the four gym walls, can be raised and lowered as needed; when lowered it will help prevent sound reverberation and echoes during concerts, dance recitals, theatre productions, and more.

HUB executive director Vicky Trill says that an initial donation from Ashcroft resident Esther Darlington kicked off the project. “Esther said ‘Let’s work on soundproofing.’ We received a $10,000 grant from Northern Development Initiative Trust (NDIT), and matching grants from Winding Rivers Arts & Performance Society, the HUB, and volunteers.”

The sound dampening was put up by Jim Duncan, Jan Schmitz, Bruce Walker, Erik Poole, and Daniel Collett. “We were able to put the curtains up because of these guys,” says Trill. “And we’re so thankful to so many people. It will really increase and improve the venue, especially for people who have hearing aids or have trouble hearing.”

NDIT also provided funding enabling the HUB to purchase new chairs, a trolley for moving them, and new tables, which can be used throughout the venue.
