Post Christmas crash on Hwy 1 claims life of Oak Bay woman

A 55 year old Oak Bay woman was killed when an SUV driver lost control of his vehicle on icy roads and crashed into her car.

Dec. 28 at 10:09 am police were called to a traffic accident fatality on Hwy 1 by Hilltop Gardens near Spences Bridge.

Lytton and Ashcroft RCMP responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident approximately 5 km north of Spences Bridge after a northbound Chevrolet Tracker lost control on icy roads and spun across the centre line, colliding with a southbound Saturn SL1.

The driver of the southbound vehicle, a 55 year old Oak Bay woman, died at the scene. Her 17 year old daughter and only passenger was transported to Kamloops’ Royal Inland Hospital by EHS for treatment of a broken arm.  The driver of the Tracker,  an 18 year old male from Fort Langley, was extricated from his vehicle by Ashcroft Fire Rescue and was transported by Air Ambulance to Royal Inland Hospital with serious leg injuries.

Icy road conditions, speed and excessively worn Winter tires are believed to have contributed to the accident. Central Interior Traffic Services is continuing with the investigation and charges may be pending against the Fort Langley man.

Both he and the 17 year old Oak Bay woman have been released from hospital and are recovering from their injuries.
