Grateful for support

On November 22, the Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) issued a media release expressing its gratitude for the “overwhelming support that was displayed during this summer’s devastating wildfire season.”

The release acknowledges that a provincial state of emergency was declared on July 7, and that over the next 71 days almost 11,000 evacuees found refuge in the regional district.

“Businesses, service providers, emergency personnel, Indigenous communities, and an unparalleled number of volunteers demonstrated their compassion, generosity, and undaunted community pride,” says the release.

“This summer was a shining example of community helping community,” says TNRD chair John Ranta. “Offers and donations started pouring in almost immediately, and kept going until every evacuation order was lifted. It was incredible.”

The release concludes, “The TNRD would like to express their sincere gratitude to everyone.”

New way to provide input

The TNRD has started to use PlaceSpeak, an award-winning location-based citizen engagement platform, for consulting with residents and key stakeholders.

PlaceSpeak allows decision-makers to be confident that they are hearing from relevant and affected citizens. The platform’s unique geo-verification technology ensures that the feedback collected is coming exclusively from residents within the TNRD’s jurisdictional boundaries. PlaceSpeak also makes it easy for residents to stay informed and get involved in the decision-making process. Residents only have to register once in order to be notified of, and participate in, all future consultations in the region.

There are currently two consultations open for public input. First, residents are invited to provide feedback on the draft 2018 Regional Solid Waste Management Plan, and share ideas on how the region can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills while keeping the cost of the system sustainable (http://placespeak.com/TNRDsolidwasteplan).

In addition, in the lead-up to the arrival of the TNRD Library System’s new Bookmobile, residents of communities served by the Bookmobile can share what they like about it and how it can be improved (http://placespeak.com/TNRDbookmobile).
